And that's true.
I ran my first race this year. Yeah, and my only race. I ran terrible, my worst time yet. I raced like I trained...when you factor everything in it explains everything. I've been running inside on the treadmill for the last few months. It's been more convenient and controllable than running outside when I only have a few minutes before I have to leave for work.
So I've been running inside, on a treadmill - no hills, no difficult terrain, set pace. Also a great difference in breathing - 70 degree inside with some moisture, vs. very dry 40 degree weather. This was also my first race up here at 6,200 altitude, so I didn't expect a great race.
When I trained - I'd run until I tired. Then I'd walk until I felt better, then run again. And that's what I did on this race. And that's part of how I got my worst time ever! Also the vast majority of the race was on trails and not smooth flat solid surfaces. All of that didn't help any.
On top of that I've realized exactly what a wuss I've been on my training. I am hurting so much from having a first hard run in probably a year. My knees are sore, my shins are hurting, my calves are tight. I haven't hurt once from running in my training since I've been back to it. No wonder I had my worst race time ever today!
All of this has greatly renewed my desire to race and race well. And to do better than I've done before (not worse). So I'm going to have to revamp and up my training. I just have to be careful so that I don't get hurt. But I'm not going to meet my goals for this deployment year if I don't. Weight's still going down, but running times aren't. I want to be able to actually run an organizational day run with Greg, not slowing him down to my pace. Wish me luck!
In the mean time - enjoy some pictures from the race.
